Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom’s attempt to inject himself into the WNBA’s transgender debate moved from social media stunt to courtside confrontation Sunday when he was ejected from Wintrust Arena following an altercation with Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud.
Kanter Freedom was sitting courtside wearing a shirt reading “WOMAN noun. adult human female” during the Sky game when tensions escalated late in the third quarter. During a timeout, Cloud approached Kanter Freedom and shouted at him. Kanter Freedom stood with his arms extended and moved toward the court before arena security intervened and escorted him from the building.
ESPN reported that one league source said Kanter Freedom had been making comments toward Cloud during the game, although a nearby fan disputed that account and said he had only been cheering.
A Political Stunt Meets the Actual WNBA
The confrontation comes after Kanter Freedom and fellow former NBA player Royce White publicly declared themselves women and announced they were eligible for the WNBA draft, an apparent effort to mock transgender inclusion in women’s sports.
There was just one problem with the stunt: according to ESPN, league sources say neither man is eligible to play in the WNBA.
The league’s collective bargaining agreement states that only women are eligible to play, although it does not currently contain more detailed language defining eligibility based on gender identity or sex assigned at birth. The WNBA has been discussing the issue through a task force of team executives, but no new eligibility policy has been announced.
Meanwhile, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has criticized what she described as outsiders using the league as a “political football” to create division.
No Arena Ban Yet
Despite Sunday’s ejection, the WNBA has not announced that Kanter Freedom will be banned from future games. ESPN reported Monday that any decision regarding his future access to league arenas remains unresolved.
The episode nevertheless illustrates how quickly the manufactured transgender controversy surrounding the WNBA has moved beyond hypothetical policy arguments.
Kanter Freedom and White inserted themselves into the conversation by claiming transgender identities as part of a political stunt. Kanter Freedom then showed up courtside wearing an anti-trans slogan and became involved in a confrontation with an actual WNBA player.
For weeks, transgender participation has been pushed into the center of WNBA discourse despite the controversy being driven largely by people outside the league. Engelbert has publicly called out those efforts to manufacture division.
Sunday’s spectacle at Wintrust Arena may have provided one of the clearest examples yet of exactly what she was talking about.
