Pride Turns to Pain: Trans Woman Attacked with Acid in Philly

On the first day of Pride Month, a transgender woman was viciously attacked with a corrosive chemical by three children in West Philadelphia. Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime, and the victim faces multiple surgeries and a long recovery. Community leaders are calling for accountability and support as Diana’s friends launch a fundraiser to aid her healing.

On what should have been a day filled with celebration and community support for Pride Month, a 25-year-old transgender woman was brutally attacked in West Philadelphia. According to authorities, three juveniles, estimated to be between 8 and 12 years old, threw a corrosive substance, possibly battery acid, at her just after 1:30 p.m. as she walked from SEPTA’s Market–Frankford El, suffering second and third-degree burns to her face, chest, arm, and torso.

The victim, identified only as “Diana” by police and local reporting, was en route to join friends for a Pride event. Friends describe her as joyful, warm, and actively engaged in Philadelphia’s queer nightlife; she hosts bingo nights at Dirty Frank’s and was known for her “great sense of humor” and inclusive spirit. She is currently listed in stable condition in Temple University’s Burn Center, where she is expected to require multiple skin grafts and a lengthy recovery.

Philadelphia’s Southwest Detective Division released surveillance footage showing the group boarding the train at 52nd Street and leaving the scene at 51st and Ludlow streets. Police are treating the incident as both assault and a possible hate crime, given the victim’s gender identity and the timing, on the first day of Pride Month, a time meant for solidarity and celebration.

Pennsylvania State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta criticized the attack as “horrific,” emphasizing that “Pride is supposed to be a celebration. Instead, we’re starting with a hate-fueled attack that will leave this 25-year-old woman scarred for life.” He added an urgent plea: “Parents need to step up. We all have a role to play in teaching our kids dignity, empathy, and basic humanity.”

Councilmember Jamie Gauthier echoed these sentiments, pointing out the broader context: politically driven anti-trans rhetoric hasn’t just impacted adults; it’s shaping the attitudes and actions of children. “Young people are not born with hate in their hearts,” she wrote, urging dialogue and accountability.

Family, friends, and allies have launched an online fundraiser to support Diana’s medical and living expenses. One close friend remarked, “I can’t believe how strong she is.” Community support is pouring in, with messages affirming, “We see her. We love her. We’re not letting this go.”

Philadelphia Police are appealing to the public for help. Anyone with information is asked to call the Southwest Detective Division at 215‑686‑3183 or the TIP line at 215‑686‑TIPS (8477). Anonymous tips can also be submitted via text to PPDTIP or online. The investigation remains open as authorities work to identify the young assailants and determine the motive.

The Bottom Line

This attack serves as a chilling reminder: anti-trans hate remains deeply embedded, not just in rhetoric, but now, tragically, in violence faced by youth. A true Pride celebration must go beyond parades and parties. It demands vigilance, advocacy, and empathy-building at every level, starting in our homes, schools, and neighborhoods.

Encourage open conversations with children about respect and diversity. Show up for local trans leaders like Kenyatta and Gauthier, who are speaking out. Support trans individuals recovering from trauma, whether financially, emotionally, or through community presence.

To Diana: we stand with you. We walk with you through every scar, every healing step.

If you’re able, consider donating to Diana’s GoFundMe. Share her story. Hold your local leaders accountable. And most importantly, keep loving, keep fighting, and keep Pride real.
