Elon Musk’s political machine has apparently decided what Republicans need to hear to get them to the polls this November: transgender people.
America PAC, the super PAC largely bankrolled by Musk, has launched a new advertising campaign targeting Democratic Senate candidates in four competitive races. According to Axios, the ads attack Sherrod Brown in Ohio, Josh Turek in Iowa, James Talarico in Texas, and Mary Peltola in Alaska over transgender athletes, gender-affirming healthcare, and other trans-related issues.
For transgender Americans, consider this the warning flare.
We should prepare to spend the remaining weeks of the 2026 election cycle being turned into a political bludgeon.
The Issue Voters Aren’t Asking About
The remarkable part isn’t simply that Republicans are campaigning on transgender issues. We’ve seen that movie before.
It’s that voters aren’t particularly asking them to.
Axios reports that polling shows voters are overwhelmingly concerned about issues including the economy and the Iran war, while transgender and LGBTQ+ issues barely register among their priorities.
That tells us something important about what these ads are actually designed to accomplish.
America PAC isn’t primarily trying to persuade undecided voters that transgender policy should become their biggest concern. Its strategy is centered on getting conservative voters who might otherwise stay home during a midterm election to show up.
Transgender people are being used as the emotional trigger.
The formula is painfully familiar: take complicated questions involving healthcare, schools, or athletics, strip away virtually all nuance, attach them to a Democratic candidate, and package transgender people as something voters should fear.
There Is Serious Money Behind It
America PAC isn’t some random political Facebook page.
Federal Election Commission records identify it as an independent-expenditure-only super PAC. Elon Musk poured enormous sums into the organization during the 2024 election, when it spent more than $260 million helping elect Donald Trump and other Republicans.
Musk is again preparing to spend heavily during the 2026 midterms, with America PAC focusing on digital advertising, direct mail, and Republican voter turnout.
Musk is the financial force behind the operation, but he isn’t working alone. Chris Young, a longtime Republican political operative who became one of Musk’s top political advisers, serves as America PAC’s treasurer. Generra Peck, who managed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ 2024 presidential campaign, has also been reported as overseeing America PAC’s political operation.
The PAC reported raising more than $50 million during the current election cycle through June.
Get Ready
There are still weeks remaining before Election Day on November 3.
If America PAC believes transgender messaging can motivate conservative voters, these four Senate races probably won’t be the last places we see it.
That means transgender Americans should expect our healthcare, bodies, participation in sports, and basic existence to repeatedly appear in political advertisements between now and Election Day.
None of that means transgender people suddenly became one of America’s biggest problems. In fact, the polling suggests exactly the opposite.
But elections aren’t always fought over what voters care about most. Sometimes they’re fought over what political strategists believe they can make voters angry about.
And once again, someone with an enormous pile of money has decided transgender people make a convenient target.
