Trump and Hegseth’s Anti-Trans Slurs Raise Alarms Over Escalating Rhetoric

Trump and Hegseth are turning anti-trans slurs into political talking points. Advocates warn that when hateful rhetoric comes from the White House and Pentagon, the consequences can extend far beyond words.

President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are facing renewed criticism over their public use of an anti-transgender slur, prompting concerns that discriminatory language is becoming increasingly normalized at the highest levels of the federal government.

In an October 11 opinion piece published by MS NOW, transgender journalist and activist Imara Jones warned that the administration’s rhetoric could signal a more aggressive phase of its campaign against transgender Americans.

Jones argued that the language should not be dismissed as political provocation, particularly when accompanied by federal policies restricting transgender rights.

Anti-Trans Language From the White House and Pentagon

During a September 30 address to senior military leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Hegseth used an anti-transgender slur while describing his vision for the armed forces.

The defense secretary grouped transgender people with other categories he portrayed as undesirable, concluding his remarks with a declaration that the military should consist of warriors.

The comments followed previous appearances in which Hegseth used similar language, including speeches at the Iowa State Fair and Texas A&M University.

Days later, Trump employed the same slur in an October 5 Truth Social post attacking Annie Andrews, the Democratic candidate running for U.S. Senate in South Carolina.

Andrews, a pediatrician who is not transgender, was targeted with a derogatory nickname incorporating the slur. Trump also accused her of supporting transgender policies he opposed.

The president’s remarks drew criticism for using transgender identity as an insult against a political opponent.

Warnings About What Comes Next

Jones, founder of TransLash Media, framed the incidents within a broader historical pattern in which political leaders intensify attacks against marginalized populations during periods of political uncertainty.

Her commentary suggested that repeated public use of derogatory language by powerful officials risks encouraging discrimination beyond political speeches.

The concerns come as the administration continues defending restrictions on transgender military service, alongside broader efforts to roll back federal protections related to gender identity.

The administration has characterized its military policies as measures intended to improve readiness and effectiveness. Critics argue that the repeated use of slurs by senior officials raises questions about whether those policies are motivated solely by military considerations.

In June, a federal appellate judge examining the military restrictions expressed concern that provisions of the policy appeared motivated by hostility toward transgender people.

Rhetoric Becomes an Election Issue

The controversy also arrives weeks before the November midterm elections, when transgender rights remain a prominent subject in Republican political messaging.

Democratic candidates have taken differing approaches to responding, with some defending transgender protections and others distancing themselves from certain policies involving sports and medical care.

For transgender Americans, the dispute extends beyond offensive terminology. The growing concern among advocates is that language once widely recognized as unacceptable is increasingly being used by government officials while those same officials exercise authority over transgender people’s rights and opportunities.

Jones’ warning centers on that connection between rhetoric and government power, and whether increasingly hostile public statements could precede additional restrictions.
