Seattle Police Release Suspect Photos in UW Trans Student Killing

Seattle police released surveillance photos of a suspect in the fatal stabbing of a transgender University of Washington student found inside campus housing. The killing has shaken Seattle’s LGBTQIA+ community, prompted memorials across campus, and led to the postponement of a controversial Turning Point USA event amid growing safety concerns.

Seattle police have released surveillance images of a suspect connected to the fatal stabbing of a 19-year-old transgender student at the University of Washington, as grief and fear continue to spread through the campus LGBTQIA+ community.

The student was found Sunday night in a laundry room inside Nordheim Court, a university-affiliated housing complex near campus. Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet publicly released her name pending family notification.

Seattle Police Department investigators said the suspect remains at large and should be considered dangerous. Newly released photos show a man believed to be connected to the killing. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the department’s violent crimes tip line.

The killing has shaken students across the University of Washington community, particularly LGBTQIA+ students who say the tragedy has intensified ongoing concerns about safety and rising anti-transgender rhetoric nationwide. Seattle and the broader Pacific Northwest have increasingly become destinations for transgender people seeking stronger legal protections and more affirming communities compared to many other parts of the United States.

Student organizations and campus advocates gathered this week to mourn the victim and support one another. Memorials with flowers, candles, and handwritten notes have appeared outside the apartment complex where the stabbing occurred.

The tragedy also sparked controversy surrounding a planned Turning Point USA event at the university featuring detransitioner and conservative activist Chloe Cole. Critics argued that hosting an anti-transgender-focused political event only days after the killing sent a harmful message to transgender students already grieving and fearful.

Following mounting backlash and reported security concerns, the event was postponed this week. Organizers cited safety threats and escalating tensions on campus as reasons for the cancellation.

University of Washington President Ana Mari Cauce and campus leadership issued statements expressing condolences and acknowledging the emotional toll the killing has had on LGBTQIA+ students and staff. Counseling resources and additional support services have also been made available.

As the investigation continues, students say they are struggling with both grief and anxiety while waiting for an arrest. Some residents at Nordheim Court have also raised questions about security measures at the housing complex after reports of previous suspicious incidents in the area.

Police have not yet announced a motive in the case.
