A simple slogan, “PROTECT THE DOLLS,” has ignited a digital battleground on Twitter, where transgender women and their allies are clashing with gender-critical voices in a meme war that underscores the ongoing struggle for trans rights.
The Hashtag That Sparked a Movement
The phrase “Protect the Dolls,” emblazoned on a T-shirt worn by actor Pedro Pascal at the London premiere of Marvel’s Thunderbolts, quickly became a rallying cry for the transgender community. Conner Ives designed the shirt with the intention of highlighting the need to protect transgender women, affectionately known as “dolls” within LGBTQ+ circles. Proceeds from the shirt support Trans Lifeline, a nonprofit offering crisis support for transgender individuals.
Pascal’s public support, especially poignant given his relationship with his transgender sister, Lux Pascal, resonated deeply with advocates and allies. He further criticized author J.K. Rowling, a supporter of a U.K. Supreme Court ruling that defined womanhood based on biological sex, labeling her actions as “heinous LOSER behavior” in an Instagram comment.

A Meme War Erupts
The hashtag #ProtectTheDolls quickly gained traction on Twitter, with supporters sharing messages of solidarity and creative memes. One user tweeted, “PROTECT THE DOLLS! 🏳️⚧️” alongside a photo of Pascal in the T-shirt.
Transgender women and allies used the hashtag to share personal stories, artwork, and messages of empowerment. The campaign also inspired a wave of memes featuring iconic dolls like Barbie, reimagined as symbols of resistance and strength.
Backlash and Co-Opting
However, the movement faced immediate backlash from gender-critical voices. J.K. Rowling herself changed her Twitter header to an image featuring dolls, a move perceived by many as a mocking retort to the “Protect the Dolls” campaign.
Some gender-critical accounts began using the hashtag to mock transgender identities, posting satirical memes and altered versions of the T-shirt with slogans like “Protect Real Women.” One user wrote, “Hi there gender borgs. If you use a slogan that so obviously contradicts the truth: We WILL laugh. And we WILL use it for all it is worth.”
A Symbol of Solidarity
Despite the controversy, the “Protect the Dolls” campaign continues to gain momentum, symbolizing a broader call for inclusivity and protection of transgender individuals. As public figures like Pascal use their platforms to advocate for marginalized communities, the conversation around transgender rights remains at the forefront of cultural discourse.
For transgender women, their families, and allies, the campaign serves as both a beacon of support and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and recognition.
