A dispute between two New Hampshire Democratic lawmakers is drawing national attention after State Rep. Alice Wade, an openly transgender legislator, accused a fellow Democrat of repeatedly pressuring her to abandon a planned congressional campaign because she is transgender.
Wade made the allegations in a lengthy public Facebook post this week, claiming that fellow State Rep. Heath Howard, a Democratic candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), spent months trying to convince her that she was unelectable because of her gender identity. The accusations have reignited debate over whether concerns about “electability” are discouraging transgender candidates from seeking higher office, even within progressive political circles.
According to Wade, Howard contacted her repeatedly between June and September 2025 after she began exploring a run for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District. She alleges he argued that voters would never elect a transgender member of Congress, suggested she withdraw in favor of another candidate, and promised to support future political opportunities if she stepped aside. Wade also claims Howard warned that their friendship would be over if she continued pursuing the race.
“Coming from anyone, those comments would be painful,” Wade wrote. “Coming from someone who publicly stood beside me opposing anti-trans legislation, they felt like a profound betrayal.”
Howard initially disputed Wade’s account of their conversations. However, he later acknowledged making comments related to her transgender identity and apologized for the harm they caused.
“It was never my intent to reduce Alice’s candidacy to her identity,” Howard said in a statement. “Intent and impact are different things, and I sincerely apologize.”
The controversy has received heightened attention because Howard is not a conservative political opponent but a fellow Democrat aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America, an organization that generally advocates for LGBTQ+ equality and transgender rights. While there is no indication that the DSA organization was involved in Howard’s conversations with Wade or endorsed his views, the allegations have prompted questions about whether assumptions surrounding transgender candidates’ electability persist even among progressive activists.
The dispute also comes at a time when transgender candidates face unprecedented political headwinds nationwide. Anti-transgender rhetoric has become a staple of Republican campaign messaging in recent election cycles, with transgender rights frequently used as a wedge issue in races at every level of government.
For LGBTQ+ advocates, Wade’s allegations underscore a different challenge. Rather than overt hostility from political opponents, the pressure she describes reflects an argument that transgender candidates should voluntarily step aside because prejudice may make them harder to elect.
Whether framed as strategic advice or discrimination, critics argue that such reasoning reinforces the very biases it claims to acknowledge.
Wade has not announced whether she intends to pursue another congressional campaign, but said she chose to make the conversations public because they continued to weigh on her. As more transgender Americans seek elected office, the episode serves as a reminder that barriers to representation can come not only from ideological opponents but also from allies who question whether voters are ready for transgender leadership.
