Trans Immigrant in Michigan Alleges Mistreatment in ICE Custody

Michigan LGBTQ+ advocacy groups are calling for oversight after a transgender immigrant reported mistreatment while in ICE custody. While the agency denies the claims, advocates point to ongoing risks faced by transgender people in detention, including limited access to health care and safety concerns. The case has intensified demands for accountability and reforms to ensure gender-affirming treatment nationwide.

A transgender immigrant woman from Ypsilanti is alleging mistreatment while in federal custody after being detained by U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a traffic stop earlier this summer.

According to reports, the woman was stopped by Romulus police and later transferred to federal detention. She claims she was denied proper medical care and that her gender identity was disregarded during the process.

ICE has denied those allegations. In a statement to CBS News Detroit, the agency said that detainees held for more than 72 hours are provided access to showers, soap, and towels, and that the woman showered on June 9 and June 12. ICE also said she was allowed telephone access in line with national detention standards.

Despite those assurances, LGBTQ+ advocacy groups in Michigan have raised concerns about her treatment and the broader conditions faced by transgender people in detention. Several organizations have issued statements calling for investigations and stronger protections for vulnerable populations.

Advocates Respond

Equality Michigan and other local LGBTQ+ organizations have spoken out in support of the woman, urging federal officials to review how transgender detainees are housed and treated. Advocates note that transgender people in detention are at higher risk of abuse and often lack access to necessary health care, including hormone therapy.

Broader Context

National studies on immigration detention have documented ongoing challenges for transgender individuals. Reports highlight incidents of mistreatment, isolation, and denial of gender-affirming care. Human rights groups have recommended reducing detention for transgender immigrants and expanding alternatives that ensure safety and dignity.

Community leaders in Michigan are pressing for accountability and oversight. They say the case illustrates the gap between federal standards and the experiences reported by detainees.

The woman remains in custody while her immigration case is pending. Supporters continue to call for her release and for reforms to how transgender individuals are treated in detention facilities.
