Sesame Street Celebrates Pride, Ignites ‘Grooming’ Hysteria

Sesame Street’s sweet Pride Month post featuring beloved characters like Elmo and Cookie Monster has sparked a surge of online support from LGBTQ+ fans and predictable cries of “grooming” from conservative critics. As usual, a simple message of inclusion and acceptance has become another flashpoint in the culture war, but for trans people and allies, it’s a bright, comforting sign that we still belong.

Sesame Street’s celebration of Pride Month has once again ruffled the feathers of the far-right, who apparently think that a rainbow-themed “Sunny Days” post is a gateway drug to drag brunch. On June 1, the beloved children’s show posted an Instagram reel featuring Cookie Monster, Big Bird, and Elmo proudly wearing rainbow accessories with a simple message: “Happy Pride from Sesame Street!” The post included a short clip of the characters dancing under rainbow streamers, set to the show’s classic theme song.

This sweet gesture has been widely celebrated by LGBTQ+ fans and allies, many of whom grew up with Sesame Street as a safe, inclusive space on television. For them, the post was a warm reminder that love and acceptance belong to everyone, including those of us in the queer community.

Of course, some folks just can’t handle that. Almost immediately, the post drew hundreds of angry comments from self-appointed morality police, many of whom called the post “grooming” and accused the show of “targeting children” with a message of love and inclusivity. Let’s be real: it’s the same old script from people who think a rainbow is a political statement and that trans kids are a threat to the natural order.

For trans people and our allies, this backlash is both exhausting and revealing. The cries of “groomer” are a tired tactic, an attempt to portray LGBTQ+ people as dangerous simply for existing. It’s a tactic we’ve seen before, repackaged from old Anita Bryant rants in the ‘70s to the more recent demonization of Drag Queen Story Hour. It’s nothing new, and it’s certainly not honest.

What’s honest is that Sesame Street has always championed diversity. Since its debut in 1969, the show has featured characters of different races, abilities, and backgrounds. It has used its platform to normalize difference and teach children to be kind, respectful, and curious. Including a brief Pride message is consistent with that mission, not some radical shift.

Moreover, for trans kids and their families, seeing a beloved children’s show say “We see you” can be a powerful affirmation. It tells them they’re not alone, that the world isn’t entirely hostile to who they are. And let’s not forget: Sesame Street is a children’s show. Its core mission is to help kids grow smarter, stronger, and kinder. That includes trans kids, too.

The irony of these critics, many of whom have never actually watched an episode, screaming about “indoctrination” while Sesame Street is simply saying “everyone deserves to feel safe and loved” is as transparent as it is ridiculous. If your definition of “grooming” includes rainbow socks and a friendly puppet dance, you might need to re-evaluate your priorities.

As Pride Month continues, Sesame Street’s small but meaningful post is a bright reminder that kids’ shows can be beacons of acceptance in a world that too often tries to dim that light. To the trans community and our allies, it’s a message we all need to hear: you belong, you matter, and you deserve a place on Sesame Street.
