LGBTQIA+ Filipinos Demand Action After Tragic Death

The death of Gian Molina, a trans woman from Peñablanca, Cagayan, has sparked widespread outrage and mourning across the Philippines. Found lifeless in the Cagayan River, her story has ignited calls for justice, safety, and the end of gender-based violence. As an investigation continues, LGBTQIA+ advocates are demanding real change and protection for trans lives.

Shock and sorrow are spreading across the LGBTQIA+ community in the Philippines following the tragic discovery of Gian Molina, also known as Kierra Apostol, a proud trans woman whose lifeless body was found in the Cagayan River near San Isidro, Iguig, on June 23.

Molina, a resident of Peñablanca, Cagayan, is remembered by friends and community members as joyful, outspoken, and proud of her identity. An investigation into the circumstances of her death is currently underway. As of this writing, authorities have not publicly stated whether foul play is suspected.

The news has triggered a wave of grief, anger, and calls for justice across Filipino social media. Supporters are demanding not only answers but real action to address the ongoing violence against trans people.

“Bakit matindi ang galit ng lipunan sa aming mga parte ng LGBTQIA+?” asked one widely shared post. “Why does society hate people like us in the LGBTQIA+ community so much?”

“Tao rin naman kami! Bakit kailangang humantong sa pagkitil ng buhay ng isang transwoman?!” the post continued. “We are human too! Why does it have to lead to the killing of a trans woman?!”

These emotional pleas convey not only heartbreak but also frustration with a system that persists in treating trans lives as disposable. Friends and advocates have taken to platforms like Facebook and Twitter to mourn Molina’s loss while demanding deeper societal change.

“Rest beautiful in eternity, Gian 🖤🏳️‍⚧️🕊️” read one tribute. “Let’s stop hate and gender-based violence towards LGBTQIA+ especially transgender women!”

The Philippines has long struggled with anti-LGBTQIA+ bias, despite a vibrant queer culture and growing visibility. The SOGIE Equality Bill, which would provide protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity, has languished in Congress for years with no sign of advancement. Without it, cases involving LGBTQIA+ victims often receive little attention from authorities and even less justice.

“Nasaan o sino ang tunay naming mga kakampi sa lipunan?” another post asked.
“Where are our true allies in society?”

“Mag-ingat tayong lahat, lalo na sa panahon ngayon na puro na lang karahasan.” it added. “We all need to be careful, especially now that everything seems to be violence.”

At the time of publication, officials had not released any further statements or confirmed the cause of Molina’s death. The community remains on alert, pressing for a transparent and thorough investigation.

Until answers come, her name joins too many others lost to gender-based hate and neglect.

Rest in power, Gian. Your truth lives on in those who will not stop fighting.
