RuPaul’s Drag Race star Valentina, known for her iconic appearances on Season 9 and All Stars 4, has come out as a transgender woman in a heartfelt social media post. The 34-year-old performer made the announcement on her birthday, sharing her journey and expressing gratitude for the support she has received from fans.
On Wednesday, Valentina took to Instagram to reveal her truth, writing, “Hello everyone, it’s me Valentina Xunaxi. Today is my bday. I turn 34. For some time now I’ve been in transition, I’ve been doing it privately but today I wanted to open and share with you all.” She expressed that while she has felt pressure to come out earlier, she wanted to do so on her own terms.
“I’ve decided and wanted to take today to declare myself as a transgender woman,” Valentina continued. “I welcome all the love, support, and protection from my dear fans. Thank you so much.” The post concluded with two emojis: a pink heart and the transgender flag, symbolizing pride and solidarity.
Valentina, a beloved figure in the drag community, gained recognition for her stunning looks and dramatic flair during her initial run on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9. Despite being an early fan favorite, she was memorably eliminated after attempting to perform a lip-sync while wearing a face mask, famously telling RuPaul, “I’d like to keep it on, please.” Although her exit was controversial, Valentina still won Miss Congeniality that season; however, fellow cast members called for a change in the voting process, which resulted in future seasons allowing only cast votes for the title.
In 2018, Valentina returned to compete on All Stars 4, ultimately placing sixth. She later made history as the cohost of Drag Race Mexico, alongside fellow drag performer Lolita Banana. Valentina’s star continued to rise with a notable performance in Fox’s live TV production of Rent, where she portrayed Angel Dumott Schunard, a role that allowed her to bring her unique identity and interpretation to the iconic character.
Valentina has been candid about her journey, having previously identified as nonbinary. In a 2019 interview with Out Magazine, she described herself as feeling “like a goddess” and embracing a sense of identity beyond traditional gender norms. This latest revelation marks an important chapter in her life, one that Valentina chose to share with her audience on her terms.
Fellow queens and fans alike quickly rallied around Valentina in the comments of her post. Drag icons like Bianca Del Rio, Jewels Sparkles, and Jaida Essence Hall left messages of love and support. Bianca wrote, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY! LOVE, NANA,” while Jaida added, “Happy birthday beautiful!!! Love you!”
Valentina joins a growing list of Drag Race alumni who have come out as transgender, including Laganja Estranja, Adore Delano, Madame LaQueer, and Farrah Moan, her fellow All Stars 4 contestant. Valentina’s openness and courage continue to inspire many within and beyond the LGBTQ+ community.
Valentina’s journey underscores the significance of accepting one’s truth according to its own terms. As her story unfolds, her fans, friends, and chosen family are here to uplift her, celebrating both her identity and the authenticity with which she lives her life.
