Austin Police Investigate Attack on Trans Woman as Hate Crime

A violent assault at Austin’s Barton Springs has left a transgender woman and her ally hospitalized and shaken. The incident, currently under hate crime review, involved verbal slurs and physical violence after the woman was targeted by a group of men. As police investigate, the community has rallied in support, raising thousands and demanding accountability.

A relaxing afternoon at Barton Springs turned violent for a transgender woman and her friends when a group of men allegedly harassed and physically assaulted them. The Austin Police Department is now investigating the incident as a potential hate crime.

The attack occurred around 5:22 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, at the Barton Creek spillway, known locally as “Barking Springs,” just downstream from the main Barton Springs Pool. According to police and eyewitness accounts, three men began aggressively hitting on two women near the water. When a transgender friend of the women joined them, the men launched into a barrage of transphobic slurs that escalated into physical violence.

Jarod, a bystander who stepped in to help, was severely beaten. Witnesses said he was punched in the face and struck with what may have been a rock. He sustained a broken jaw, concussion, bleeding from the ear, and multiple gashes to the head. Jarod is currently hospitalized and awaiting surgery. A GoFundMe campaign launched to support his medical care has raised more than $60,000, far surpassing its original $20,000 goal.

The transgender woman involved, who asked not to be named publicly, told reporters that the attackers made clear their motives. One of the men reportedly said, “I don’t support that lifestyle,” while pointing at her. After Jarod was knocked unconscious, she rushed to help him but was punched in the face herself. Another woman in the group was shoved to the ground as the attackers fled.

Police say the incident began with verbal harassment that turned into a physical confrontation. Officers found Jarod injured at the scene and transported him to the hospital. No arrests have been made at this time. The case has been referred to the APD Hate Crime Review Committee, which will determine whether the incident meets the legal standard for a hate crime and advise on charges.

Austin police are asking anyone who witnessed the attack or has video footage to come forward. Tips can be shared with APD at 512-974-2000 or anonymously through Austin Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS.

The assault has drawn concern from LGBTQ+ advocates across Texas and beyond. While Austin is often seen as a progressive city, the incident reflects a broader rise in violence against transgender people in the state and nationwide. Law enforcement agencies and civil rights groups have reported a disturbing increase in anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes over the past year.

Despite the trauma, the transgender woman said she has been moved by the support from the local community and beyond. Donations, messages of encouragement, and acts of solidarity have lifted her spirits. “It truly helps my moral and emotional well-being and makes me believe that this city really is a safe space for people like me,” she said.

As the investigation continues, advocates stress the importance of holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring public spaces remain safe for everyone, regardless of gender identity.
