Elon Musk Faces New Allegations Over Treatment of Trans Daughter

Elon Musk’s ex-wife claims he cut off their transgender daughter Vivian’s health insurance just one day after she came out. Musk flatly denies the allegation, using his daughter’s former name in his response. The conflicting accounts add another chapter to their very public family estrangement.

Elon Musk is disputing allegations from his former wife that he removed their transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, from his health insurance coverage just one day after she came out, adding another chapter to their increasingly public family conflict.

The allegation comes from Justine Wilson, Musk’s first wife, who discusses the billionaire’s relationship with their daughter in Musk, a new documentary directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney. The film opened in select theaters October 9 and is scheduled for nationwide release October 16.

According to Justine, Musk initially asked her to reassure Vivian that he would always love her. However, she claims he removed their daughter from his health insurance coverage the following day.

Musk responded publicly on October 11, rejecting the accusation.

“This is utterly false. At no point did I remove (deadname) from health insurance,” Musk wrote on Twitter, using his daughter’s birth name rather than her legal name, Vivian.

The conflicting accounts have not been independently verified, and no insurance records have been publicly presented to establish whether Vivian’s coverage was terminated.

A Family Conflict Years in the Making

Justine Wilson, who married Musk in 2000 and divorced him in 2008, describes a strained relationship between father and daughter that began long before Vivian publicly transitioned.

In the documentary, she recalls Musk viewing Vivian’s transition as though he had experienced the death of a child. Justine challenged that characterization, referencing the couple’s actual loss of their infant son, Nevada, who died in 2002.

For Justine, Vivian’s transition represented a child growing into her own identity, not the loss of one.

She also describes the emotional impact of Musk’s previous public statements, including his claim that he had lost his child to what he called the “woke mind virus.”

According to Justine, Musk never attempted to repair the relationship after making those statements.

Musk Defends Himself as Documentary Draws Attention

Musk has criticized Gibney’s documentary as a “hit piece,” while his attorney has threatened legal action over alleged factual inaccuracies.

In another October 11 social media exchange, Musk addressed ongoing disputes involving former partners, writing, “At this point, I would prefer to be alone and just spend time with my kids.”

Vivian, now 22, legally changed her name in 2022 and dropped her father’s surname. She has since established herself as a model and outspoken advocate for transgender visibility while publicly challenging her father’s characterization of her identity.

Although the insurance allegation remains disputed, the family’s estrangement is well documented.

The controversy also places renewed attention on the relationship between transgender young adults and their families, particularly when parental acceptance, financial support, and access to healthcare become intertwined.

For now, Justine Wilson’s account and Musk’s categorical denial leave a central question unresolved: whether Vivian’s health insurance was actually terminated following her coming out.

The documentary brings that allegation into public view, but it does not independently establish what happened.
