Matrix filmmaker Lilly Wachowski has drawn a direct line between the continued financial success of Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling’s political activism, arguing that consumers can no longer separate the franchise from the causes its creator financially supports.
In an interview with Variety, Wachowski, who came out as transgender in 2016, accused Rowling of “funding trans genocide” and argued that purchasing or supporting Harry Potter projects ultimately puts money back into Rowling’s hands.
“So, if you support Harry Potter, you’re supporting trans genocide,” Wachowski said. She compared the decision to boycott Rowling’s work with consumers choosing not to buy Tesla products because they oppose Elon Musk’s politics.
For Wachowski, the argument is less about whether someone still enjoys a childhood book or movie and more about what happens when that nostalgia becomes a financial transaction.
Rowling has increasingly used her wealth to support causes and legal battles centered on what she describes as protecting sex-based rights. In 2024, she donated £70,000 to For Women Scotland, which pursued the case that ultimately resulted in the U.K. Supreme Court ruling that the terms “woman” and “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 refer to biological sex.
In 2025, Rowling also established the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund, which provides financial assistance for legal cases involving sex-based rights. Critics argue that such efforts have contributed to legal and political campaigns restricting transgender recognition and protections.
Rowling’s representatives pushed back sharply against Wachowski’s characterization.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Rowling’s agent Neil Blair called Wachowski’s accusations “defamatory and baseless,” saying the Women’s Fund supports legal efforts to uphold sex-based protections under existing U.K. equality law. Rowling has maintained that she supports transgender adults’ right to live as they choose while opposing policies she believes undermine protections based on biological sex.
The fight comes as Harry Potter prepares for another enormous commercial revival through HBO’s upcoming television adaptation, on which Rowling serves as an executive producer. That connection makes the decades-old “separate the art from the artist” debate considerably harder to maintain.
Wachowski’s position is essentially that there is no clean financial separation anymore.
“To be trans in this world that we live in is political. My body is political,” she told Variety. Continued support for the franchise, she argued, means financially supporting someone actively using her fortune to influence the political and legal environment transgender people must live under.
For transgender Harry Potter fans, that leaves an uncomfortable distinction: loving something that once mattered to you does not necessarily require continuing to fund what it has become.
