Transgender Teens Drop New Hampshire Sports Lawsuit After Supreme Court Ruling

Two transgender girls have dismissed their lawsuit challenging New Hampshire's ban on transgender athletes and President Trump's sports executive order following a Supreme Court ruling that upheld similar state restrictions. The decision highlights the increasingly difficult legal landscape facing transgender student-athletes across the United States.

A legal challenge that once offered hope to transgender student-athletes in New Hampshire has officially come to an end. Two transgender teenagers have voluntarily dismissed their lawsuit challenging both New Hampshire’s ban on transgender girls participating in girls’ school sports and President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting transgender athletes, marking another significant setback for transgender rights following the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling on school sports.

The lawsuit was brought by Parker Tirrell and Iris Turmelle, two New Hampshire students who challenged the state’s 2024 law barring transgender girls from competing on girls’ athletic teams. Earlier this year, they expanded their case to also challenge Trump’s executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” arguing that both policies violated their constitutional rights and protections under Title IX.

For much of the legal battle, the teens were able to continue participating in school athletics under a temporary federal court order. Parker Tirrell remained on her high school girls’ soccer team, while Iris Turmelle prepared to participate in future school sports. However, everything changed after the Supreme Court ruled in June that state bans on transgender girls competing in girls’ sports do not violate Title IX, effectively removing the strongest legal foundation for their case.

Rather than continue litigation with little chance of success, both sides agreed to dismiss the lawsuit.

While the legal filing may be over, the emotional impact remains.

According to statements filed with the court, Tirrell ultimately stopped playing soccer because of the intense public attention surrounding her participation. Her family described increased security at games, protests, and relentless scrutiny that transformed what should have been a typical high school sports experience into a political battleground. Despite receiving support from teammates and coaches, they said the pressure became overwhelming.

Turmelle’s family faced an even more dramatic decision. After New Hampshire enacted additional restrictions affecting transgender youth, including limits on gender-affirming healthcare for minors, they relocated out of state in search of a more supportive environment.

Their attorneys emphasized that ending the lawsuit should not be interpreted as surrender. Instead, they described the decision as a recognition of the dramatically altered legal landscape created by the Supreme Court’s ruling. The legal organizations representing the students praised both teens for their willingness to challenge laws they believed discriminated against them despite becoming national political targets.

The dismissal reflects a broader shift occurring across the country. Following the Supreme Court’s decision, states with existing bans are expected to face fewer legal obstacles in enforcing restrictions, while lawmakers in additional states have already begun pushing for similar legislation. Although some states continue to permit transgender athletes to compete according to their gender identity, advocates warn that the legal path to challenging sports bans has become significantly narrower.

For transgender youth and their families, the conclusion of the New Hampshire case underscores how rapidly the national landscape has changed. What began as a fight over the right to play school sports has become another reminder that transgender students increasingly find themselves at the center of America’s ongoing political and legal battles.
