Nancy Mace Fact-Checked Over ‘Transgender Mice’ Bill

Nancy Mace's proposed "TRANS MICE Act" sparked backlash after experts clarified that much of the research she appeared to reference involves transgenic mice used in medical studies. The controversy adds to growing scrutiny of the congresswoman's ongoing focus on transgender issues following a significant political defeat earlier this month.

Rep. Nancy Mace is facing renewed criticism after social media users and scientists pushed back against her latest anti-transgender messaging campaign, this time over legislation targeting what she described as federally funded research involving “transgender mice.” Critics quickly pointed out that much of the research Mace appeared to reference involves transgenic mice, a well-established scientific tool used in medical and cancer research, not transgender animals.

Mace announced the proposal, dubbed the “TRANS MICE Act,” on social media, claiming it would stop federal funding for animal experiments connected to gender-related research. The post was soon accompanied by a Community Note explaining that “trans mice” in many scientific contexts refers to transgenic mice, animals that have been genetically modified to help researchers study disease, genetics, and potential treatments.

The distinction quickly became the focus of online ridicule. Scientists, researchers, and political commentators accused Mace of either misunderstanding the terminology or deliberately using confusing language to generate outrage. Critics argued that attacking research involving transgenic mice could inadvertently undermine important biomedical studies, including research related to cancer and other serious diseases.

The controversy arrives after a difficult political month for Mace. Earlier this June, the South Carolina congresswoman suffered a major defeat in the state’s Republican gubernatorial primary, finishing in last place among candidates. The loss triggered widespread online criticism, with many commentators linking her political decline to years of highly publicized attacks on transgender people.

Mace has become one of Congress’s most visible anti-transgender voices since late 2024, when she introduced legislation specifically targeting newly elected Congresswoman Sarah McBride. Mace openly acknowledged that McBride was the inspiration for her proposed bathroom restrictions in the U.S. Capitol and later expanded those efforts into broader federal legislation.

For many LGBTQ+ advocates, the latest dispute highlights a familiar pattern. Rather than addressing issues such as healthcare access, housing, or economic concerns, critics argue that some politicians continue to use transgender people as political talking points. In this case, they say, the attempt to score political points backfired when scientific terminology became the story.

While Mace has since insisted that her legislation is not about transgenic mice and is instead aimed at federally funded experiments involving hormone-related research, critics continue to question both the scientific accuracy and practical purpose of the proposal.

The episode serves as another reminder that debates about transgender people often extend far beyond actual transgender lives, sometimes reaching into scientific fields where facts can become collateral damage in a political culture war.
