A day of thrills at Ohio’s famed Cedar Point amusement park ended in trauma for one transgender guest after an 18-year-old man was arrested for allegedly pulling down her skirt and underwear in a public area of the park, exposing her to onlookers that reportedly included children.
According to Sandusky police, the incident occurred on May 25 near the park’s main gate as guests were leaving for the evening. Authorities allege that 18-year-old Marquez Williams approached a transgender woman from behind and forcibly pulled down her clothing, exposing her buttocks and genitals without consent. Witnesses immediately reported the incident to park security and law enforcement.
The victim’s friend, April Dempster, told local media they had been visiting Cedar Point to celebrate her birthday and had just finished riding the park’s popular Top Thrill 2 coaster when the assault occurred. Dempster said the attack happened suddenly and left the victim shocked and humiliated.
Police say Williams fled the scene after the incident, triggering a pursuit through Cedar Point’s parking lot. Officers reportedly ordered him to stop multiple times before deploying a Taser when he continued to run. Authorities said he resisted arrest after being taken to the ground, resulting in additional charges.
Williams was booked into the Erie County Jail and charged with public indecency, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstructing official business. Court records indicate he was scheduled to appear before the Sandusky Municipal Court on June 3.
While police have not publicly classified the incident as a hate crime, the victim reportedly told investigators she believes she was targeted because she is transgender. The assault has sparked outrage across LGBTQ+ communities and online discussions, with many questioning whether misdemeanor charges adequately reflect the seriousness of forcibly exposing another person in public.
Advocates note that incidents like this can have lasting emotional effects far beyond any physical harm. Dempster told reporters that the victim was so shaken by the experience that she initially did not want to return to the park or leave her hotel room during the remainder of the trip. Fortunately, she has since returned home and is recovering with support from friends and her community.
The incident serves as another reminder that transgender people can face harassment and public humiliation in everyday spaces, even while simply enjoying a holiday weekend with friends. For many in the community, the story is not just about one arrest at an amusement park. It is about the ongoing reality that transgender people often must navigate public spaces while wondering whether they will be treated with the same dignity and safety as everyone else.
