Moira Deeming Uses False Claims in Push Against Trans Athletes

At the Victoria Liberal Party’s conference, MP Moira Deeming pushed a motion to restrict trans women from competing in women’s sports, repeating claims debunked by medical research. Experts stress that athletic performance is far more complex than her rhetoric suggests. Advocates warn that exclusionary policies harm mental health and community belonging, calling instead for evidence-based rules that balance fairness with inclusion.

At the Victoria Liberal Party’s annual conference, Member of Parliament Moira Deeming reignited controversy around transgender participation in sports by endorsing a motion that called for restrictions on trans women competing in women’s categories. Her remarks, which leaned heavily on claims long challenged by medical experts, drew concern from equality advocates who say such rhetoric fuels discrimination rather than fairness.

In her address, Deeming argued that biological sex should determine eligibility in women’s sports, describing men as a “sex class” with physical advantages that women cannot match. She pointed to traits such as lung capacity, heart size, and muscle strength, insisting these gave trans women an insurmountable edge even after transition. She claimed that every women’s world record in athletics had been surpassed by teenage boys, an assertion that is not supported by evidence.

Medical researchers have repeatedly found the picture to be far more complex than Deeming suggested. A 2024 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine compared cisgender and transgender athletes, with the trans participants having completed at least one year of hormone replacement therapy. The findings showed mixed results: in some areas, such as lung volume, trans women tested higher, while in other measures like lower body strength, jumping ability, and aerobic fitness, they did not. Experts emphasize that hormone therapy, training regimens, and individual differences all play a role, and that broad generalizations about advantage do not reflect athletic realities.

Despite this evidence, the Liberal Party conference supported Deeming’s motion, which rests on the claim that Victoria’s laws treat sex and gender identity as entirely separate categories of protection and that the two should not be considered interchangeable. Critics argue that while this interpretation may fit a narrow legal view, applying it to sporting bans risks excluding trans women based on fear rather than science.

Advocates also warn that blanket exclusions have consequences beyond competition. Participation in sports is closely linked to mental health, physical well-being, and community belonging. For transgender women already facing high rates of discrimination and isolation, being barred from sports can reinforce marginalization. Sporting bodies across Australia have wrestled with this issue, with some federations setting policies based on hormone levels or other criteria rather than outright exclusion.

The debate over fairness versus inclusion is not new, but Deeming’s comments highlight how misinformation continues to shape public discourse. Claims about universal athletic dominance by trans women, critics note, rely on exaggerations that mislead audiences and obscure the nuances of scientific research. By framing trans inclusion as a threat to women’s sport, opponents risk undermining both evidence-based policy and the dignity of athletes themselves.

As the Liberal Party embraces Deeming’s motion, the question of how sporting organizations respond becomes increasingly urgent. The challenge for policymakers and administrators is to balance fairness with inclusion, guided by credible research rather than political slogans. For trans athletes, the stakes are deeply personal: the right to participate, to compete, and to belong without having their identities reduced to talking points in a culture war.
